Sioux Falls, SD Sewer Ditch Cave In, Aug 1966
HARRISBURG MAN SUFFOCATED BY CAVE-IN AT SIOUX FALLS.
Sioux Falls, S.D. (AP) -- One man was killed and another was saved when the wall of a sewer ditch caved in on the pair.
Dead is JAMES METZGER, 25, Harrisburg. HERBERT OSWALD, 56, Sioux Falls, was treated at a hospital and released.
Investigating officers report that OSWALD was working in the bottom of the 12-foot sewer ditch when a partial cave-in occurred Monday. METZGER jumped in to help the older man and apparently triggered a second slide.
Both men were buried for 15-20 minutes before other construction workers were able to dig them out.
George Boom, Minnehaha County coroner, said that OSWALD threw his arm over his head when the cave-in occurred and caught a chunk of dirt which formed an air pocket. OSWALD was buried deeper than was the dead man.
