Rapid City, SD Bus And Horse Collision, Aug 1966

FIVE INJURED IN BUS-HORSE MISHAP AT RAPID CITY.

Rapid City (AP) -- Five persons were injured Monday night when an Arrow Lines bus hit a horse on highway 79 one-half mile south of the Rapid City limits.
According to the Highway Patrol accident report, the bus, driven by LEO PEXA, 55, of Rapid City had just passed a car and started to pull back into the right lane of the divided highway when several horses ran onto the road.
The bus struck one horse, killing it, and went out of control, swerving into the steep borrow pit and hitting the end of a large concrete box culvert. The bus, which was heading into Rapid City, stayed on its wheels.
PEXA, according to the accident report, suffered internal injuries. There were only four passengers on the bus and each was injured.
RUTH BARNES, 49, Valentine, Neb., suffered a fractured left arm; MRS. PAULINE BERENS, 64, Edgemont, received an injury to her right knee; MRS. ALICE CONSENTINO, 66, Great Falls, Mont., received an injury to her right leg; and AGNES R. NUTT, 59, Presswick, Ayreshire, England, received a broken left arm, back injuries and an ear laceration.
The injured were taken to both Rapid City hospitals.
Threre was an estimated $5,000 damage to the bus. The dead horse, according to the accident report, belonged to Bob Mechaley of 2401 Waverly Drive, Rapid City.
