COTTON DAMAGED BY FIRE.

Several Hundred Bales Stored in Warehouses and in Box Car Burned at Rock Hill.

Rock Hill, S. C., Sept. 13.----About 4:30 o'clock this morning an alarm of fire was sounded, coming from the Hamilton-Carhartt mill. The firemen made quick run, considering the hour, and found the fire to be in the cotton warehouse on White street, and near the Caharrt mill. After a stubborn fight the fire was got under control but not before over 306 bales were damaged more or less, many estimating about an average loss of $10 a bale, which was fully covered by insurance. This cotton belonged mostly to planters and was stored in Mr. Edward Fewell's warehouse.

The firemen had hardly got through coping with the first fire when another alarm was sounded. This proved to be a fire in a box car which was loaded with cotton for shipment, consigned by Mr. J. T. Roddy, and on the siding near the freight depot.

The firemen responded to this call and did good work in putting the blaze out and rolling the cotton into the street. This cotton was not damaged quite as much as that in the first fire, and will average probably $5 a bale.
