Kingston, ON Steamer Ocean Wave Fire, May 1853

Another Steamer, Burned----Loss of Thirty-eight Lives.----Ogdensburg, May 1. We learn from Kingston, Canada West, that the steamer Ocean Wave was burnt yesterday morning, near the Dbcks[sic], fifty miles above Kingston. She is reported to have had 60 passengers on board, only 22 of whom were saved. In two hours after the fire was discovered, the hull went down. Those saved were taken off the wreck by the schooner Georgian.----A small schooner sent a boat to the assistance of the steamer before the Georgian hove in sight, but her crew became frightened and pulled away again, leaving the persons on board the burning steamer to their fate. The Georgian succeeded in rescuing 18 persons, in two minutes after which the steamer went down. Whole number lost, 38.
The Ocean Wave was owned by the Northern Railroad Co., and insured principally in the United States.
