STEAMER WAS WRECKED NEAR ST. JOHN'S.

THE REGULUS BROKE UP AT SHOAL BAY -- THREE AMERICANS AMONG THOSE DROWNED -- SEVERAL OF THE CREW SAVED BY TUG.

St. Johns, N.F., Oct. 25. -- The steamer Regulus bound from Belle Island to Sydney, was wrecked yesterday at Shoal Bay, nine miles from St. Johns, and 19 members of her crew were washed overboard and drowned.
Word that the steamer was helpless in a heavy storm with her tall shaft broken was received here late Sunday night, and the tug Ingraham put out to her assistance.
After an all-night search the Regulus was sighted at daybreak.
The storm had, however, increased in fury and four of the tug's hawsers, which were got aboard the steamer, were parted.
The tug then took off the survivors of the crew and landed them here yesterday afternoon.
The list of victims includes:
Captain TAYLOR.
MALCOLM McNEIL.
Chief Officer JOHN KENT.
Second Officer J. PENSTONE.
Chief Engineer McKNIGHT.
Second Engineer H. GOUDIE.
Third Engineer J. OSBORNE.
Steward M. L. ORHEIN.
Fireman FORBES.
Fireman MURPHY.
Fireman ROGERS.
Sailors DALTON, MANNING and FITZGERALD, all of Newfoundland.
The names of the others, three of whom were Americans are unknown. The Americans shipped at New York.
After landing the survivors the Ingraham returned to the scene of the wreck to seek bodies of the victims, but could find none. The steamer was fast breaking up and the shore was strewn with wreckage.
The Regulus was owned by Harvey & Co. of this city, and has been running between St. John's, Sydney, C.B., a few way ports, and Philadelphia.
She broke her tailshaft off the bay of Bulls, 36 miles from here, during a heavy storm yesterday.
The Regulus was 859 net tons burden, 268 feet long, 32 feet beam and 21 feet draft. She was built at Newcastle-on-Tyne in 1878 and was owned by Harvey & Co., although standing in the name of the Regulus Steamship Company.
She sailed from Philadelphia on Oct. 12 and had stopped at Sydney, ports along the straits of Belle Isle, and Belle Island. She was due here yesterday.
The Regulus was recently in collision in Delaware Bay with the steamer Karind.
