Cape Race, NF (Off Shore) Steamer INDIAN Sinking, Nov 1859

STEAMER INDIAN CATASTROPHE.
Sackville, Nov. 26.
A boat containing 28 ladies with their husbands landed safely after rocking about for nine hours on the high sea. Twenty seven are dead -- none of the bodies have been found, and it's impossible to give a complete list of the naems, but the following are lost:
LEWEN J. MOSES, wife and 2 children.
MRS. ECKMAN and child.
JAMES DICKSON.
WILLIAM ROSS, third engineer.
ROBERT RITCHIE, fourth engineer.
JOHN MILLAN, fireman.
JAMES STANDWELL, steward.
ALFRED WALSH, boy, steward.
THOMAS LLOYD, chief cook.
JAMES LONG, joiner.
JOHN HERRON, seaman.
HENRY CARROLL, seaman.
JOHN E. MORGAN, seaman.
The cabin passengers of the wrecked steamer were all saved. Their names are:
Hon. MR. PITTSFORD.
MR. and MRS. WEDRON.
MR. and MRS. PATTERSON.
MR. and MRS. STREET.
MR. ELLIOTT, eight years old.

The schooner Gladiator has returned to Halifax with the remaining survivors of the steamer Indian.
The steamer totally broken to pieces, very little cargo saved. The passengers complain of being plundered by the inhabitants. Mails saved and forwarded. Indian had 8 cabin passengers, 30 steerage passengers, mostly Germans and Hungarians, 77 crew, when struck by sea ledge.
She was running 8 knots an hour; weather fine but slightly heavy; Captain deceived by soundings; supposed he was off Sable Island. Tore off bottom and filled immediately; engines opened valves to prevent explosion; lowered three boats, when with a certain crash the vessel broke amidships. The steerage passengers rushed in and sunk two boats, drowning the engineer and several of the crew and several passengers including two women and 2 children. One boat under command of 2nd officer SMITH was blown off 30 miles. The boat under command of 4th officer SMITH reached shore. Boat under 3rd officer BIZZAN broke adrift, leaking and supposed to be lost.
