Newport, RI Torpedo Station Accident, May 1919

James E. Babcock, a machinist at the Torpedo Station, was killed while at work late Friday afternoon of last week. While working on a torpedo head, part of the apparatus blew out under the air pressure and a fragment came full into his face, crushing his so badly that he died before he could be taken to the Naval Hospital.

The victim of the accident came from Westerly to the Torpedo Station some two years ago, and had been living in Jamestown, where he leaves a wife and two children. He was well known on the island and very generally liked. He was a member of a Lodge of Odd Fellows in Westerly.
