QUICK ACTION SAVED MARKET STREET BUILDING

Fire Discovered Early Sunday Morning in Basement of Harry P. Young’s Grocery Store.

The basement of the building at 322 Market street, occupied by Harry P. Young as a grocery, was considerably damaged by fire of an unknown origin early yesterday morning. It looked for as time as if there would be a big blaze, but the firemen were quickly on the job, the motor apparatus again proving its worth in saving seconds, and by sharp work saved the situation. Only seconds saved, however, were responsible for the good work, as the fire was raging fiercely and with a little more start would have been beyond control.

Officer Adam Kinley discovered the fire and turned in the alarm. When the firemen got into the basement they found their work to be in the rear of the building, where flames were raging in a pile of boxes and rubbish of all kinds. The coal oil tank was in the center of the blaze and the flames burned all around it, fortunately without igniting it.

The loss from the fire is not known but it will probably not be extensive as the flames were confined to the basement and it was not necessary to use water save on that floor.

The firemen wish to thank the Day and Night restaurant for hot coffee and Robbin’s barber shop for cigars. Both these places are in the building in which the fire was located.
