Wrightsville, PA Fire, Sept 1909
WRIGHTSVILLE’S BAD FIRE
Other Towns Help Save Business Section – Stables Burn
Special to The Inquirer.
MARIETTA, PA, Sept 11. – Wrightsville, on the York County side of the Susquehanna River, southwest of here, with a population of 2500, was threatened with destruction tonight. Fire was discovered in the frame stables of Earl D. Sweeney, butcher, in the business section, and in a short time it was burned to the ground. Biernstock Brothers, hardware dealers, and other business places adjoining were ablaze several times and were with difficulty saved.
The reservoir contains very little water and the river is lower now than ever known and no water could be drawn. By hard work firemen of Wrightsville and adjoining towns kept the flames from spreading. Sparks were carried a mile. Bucket brigades from cisterns saved the buildings. This is the fifth fire in Wrightsville within a short time the work of an incendiary.
The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PA 12 Sept 1909
