Hanover Junction, PA train wreck, Sept 1892

YORK COUNTY.

Railroad Accident at Hanover Junction

[Special Dispatch to the Baltimore Sun.]

YORK, PA., Sept. 23. - A wreck occurred on the Northern Central Railroad near Hanover Junction this morning about 5 o'clock that was remarkable from the little damage done. A freight train sound [sic] south had stopped at Hanover Junction for orders, and received them to take a siding there. The flagman, who had gone back, returned to the train in response to the customary signal. A south-bound double-headed extra train of empty passenger coaches came dashing around the curve. The air brakes of the first engine were applied by the engineer, who, with his fireman, jumped. The locomotive crashed into the rear of the freight train, completely demolishing the caboose, and telescoped a car loaded with corn. The engine was only stripped of the cowcatcher and head light. The engineer, Philip Unglaub, of Baltimore, who jumped, received a severe scalp wound and other slight injuries. The fireman, J. Leroy, also of Baltimore, who also jumped, had his right jaw dislocated, his left jaw broken and received severe cuts in his face and on his body. Travel was delayed only a short time. The south-bound track was not cleared until noon.

The Sun, Baltimore, MD 24 Sept 1892
