York Haven, PA Train Accident, Jan 1908

HIS LEG CUT OFF.

Charles Miller, who resides with his sister, Mrs. Wolf at York Haven, met with a serious accident Thursday while celebrating his twenty fifth birthday. He tried to jump from a rapidly moving freight train, was thrown under a car and had his left leg cut off and the right foot mangled. He sustained internal injuries. The injured man was taken to York hospital where his injuries were dressed. Miller is employed at the York Haven paper mills, and was celebrating his birthday by taking a vacation. With two companions he walked to Falls Station. In returning, one of the young men suggested that they jump a freight train which was passing. All boarded the train in safety. They were discovered by a brakeman when near York Haven. He ordered them to leave the train as soon as it slowed up. It is thought that Miller was somewhat scared and he tried to get off opposite the paper mill while the train was running rapidly. The suction of the cars drew his body to the track and he was run over.

Charles Miller is a son of the late Cyrus miller and was reared on the farm in Mountpleasant township, near this place. It is now thought that the young man’s life will be saved.
