Allentown, PA Train Accident, Jul 1909

Fireman Scalded and Run Over.

ALLENTOWN, Pa., July 3.---When a Lehigh Valley Railroad freight train reached Gap Junction on the outskirts of Allentown, at 5 o'clock this morning, a flue in the engine burst, pouring its scalding contents directly over Fireman John H. Eyke, Lehighton, as he was shoveling coal into the fire-box. In his desperate efforts to escape he fell from the tender to the rails and had his right foot cut off. He was horribly scalded on his body. Eyke was taken to the St. Luke's Hospital at South Bethlehem.
