FORTY BUILDINGS BURNED

Village of Peckville, in Pennsylvania, Fire Swept

SCRANTON, Pa., March 27 Early this morning fire broke out in the village of Peckville eight miles above here and before it was checked forty buildings with much of their contents were destroyed, entailing a loss of $180,000. Thirty of the buildings were business places and they included all the principal structures of the town.

Not over half of the loss is covered by insurance and it will be years before the town will be able to recover from injury.

Fifty families are left homeless and are being cared for by the neighbors. Most of the household furniture was saved but the storekeepers suffer an almost total loss because of the inability to remove goods. The fire is supposed to have been of incendiary origin.

The Nebraska State Journal, Lincoln, NE 28 Mar 1902
