Philadelphia, PA Firemen Thrown From Firetruck on Way to Fire, Aug 1915

FIREMEN ARE THROWN FROM HOOK AND LADDER.

Have Narrow Escape From Serious Injuries Going to Fire.

Seven firemen had narrow escapes from serious injury last night when Hook and Ladder Truck No. 4, attached to the station at Fourth and Florist streets, ran into a relocated sewer operation at Third and Chestnut streets, and breaking its way through the planking which covered up the excavation, brought up with a crash. Despite their firm hold upon the framework of the truck, the men were shaken loose and thrown in every direction over the streetway and the pavement.

Though all of the men were shaken and bruised, none received serious injury. One man's knee was painfully cut, but he bandaged it up with a handkerchief, refusing to go to a hospital, and insisted on giving a hand when the truck's crew turned in to jack the fallen vehicle out of the sewer cutting.

The truck then continued on its way to the fire, which was found to have attacked the building occupied by the Sta-White Manufacturing Company, at 241 South Front street, manufacturers of plumbing materials. Spontaneous combustion was believed to have been its cause. Damage was estimated at $500.
