Madley, PA Train Wreck, Jan 1902
Forty-One Cars Derailed.
A serious freight wreck occurred on the Bedford division Tuesday night. Train No 15, composed of 105 empty coal cars, parted while passing over Buffalo summit and the two sections came together with a crash near Madley. Forty-one cars were thrown from the track and many of them were badly damaged. Twelve or thirteen were reduced to kindling and formed fuel for a big bon fire built by the employees of the road. The other cars, all of which were more or less broken, will be repaired and again put in service. The wreckage was scattered on both sides of the track for a distance of half a mile. The wrecking crews from Bedford and State Line arrived at Madley about 10.30 and at midnight had the track cleared. The railroaders expect to have the wreck cleaned up by to-morrow evening. Brakeman Leonard, who was on the rear of the front section of the broken train, saved his life by leaping from the cars just before the two sections came together.
