Manor Station, PA Train Wreck, Oct 1895 - Passengers

INDIANA PASSENGERS IN A WRECK.

They Pass Through an Exciting Period, but Escape Serious Injury.

The wreck of a mail train, west, on the Pennsylvania railroad, last Wednesday evening, will have a tendency to render nervous for some time, evening passengers from here to Pittsburg, that being the train with which they connect at the Intersection. While running at a high speed the two rear coaches jumped the track at Manor. One ran some distance over the ties and finally wound up against an embankment. The other plunged violently from side to side and then leaped on top of a freight train lying on a side track.

Freight conductor John Miller, of Derry, was standing beside his engine when the wreck occurred. He was struck by one of the derailed cars and instantly killed. In the two rear coaches were about 30 passengers, all of whom were more or less injured, although none fatally. Among the number were John Truby, of Beaver Falls, a former well known Indiana citizen and Misses Torrance and Giffen, of the Normal School. All were badly shaken up, but escaped with a few scratches.

In one of the middle coaches, which remained on the track were Mrs. J. M. Cunningham, wife of the well known liveryman, who was on her way to Wilkinsburg to visit friends; Mrs. Edwin R. Sutton and little daughter, Helen, returning from a visit at the home of Judge and Mrs. Harry White to their home in Allegheny, and Miss Gertie Clawson, who makes her home at Judge White’s, who was journeying with Mrs. Sutton. Like all other passengers in the middle coaches, they escaped injury of any kind, but the experience was one they don’t care to have repeated.
All of the injured passengers who were in condition to be moved, were take to different Pittsburg hospitals that evening. The remainder were left at Manor.
