Norristown, PA Train Accident, Aug 1895
TRIED TO SAVE A CHILD
THOMAS HOVENDEN, the Famous Artist, Met Death Through Heroism.
New York, Aug. 14. – At Norristown, Pa., this evening THOMAS HOVENDEN, the famous artist, was instantly killed by a railroad train in attempting to save the life of a little girl. HOVENDEN was returning home to his summer residence at Plymouth on a trolley car. At Trenton cutoff, on the Pennsylvania road, the passengers of the trolley cars transfer to another line, and in doing so, walk across the Pennsylvania tracks. MRS. CLARA PEIFFER and her 10-year-old daughter, BESSIE, were also passengers on the trolley car. At the place of transfer BESSIE ran ahead of her mother on to the Pennsylvania tracks and paused in front of a swiftly approaching train. HOVENDEN, seeing the danger, dashed for the child and caught her in his arms, but before he could make a leap which would have saved both, the pilot of the engine struck him with terrific force, killing him almost instantly. The child lived but a few minutes.
