FIRE DESTROYS A TOWN

Many Persons Saved by Brave College Boys – Loss $100,000.

The business portion of Grove City, Penn., has been wiped out of existence by a destructive fire. The flames originated in the FOSTERS barber shop at two o'clock in the morning, and with inconceivable speed swept through the town down the main street, devouring everything in its path. The absence of extinguishing apparatus and a strong wind thwarted the efforts to extinguish the fire. Hundreds of brave students of Grove City College fought the flames, with heroic energy, but in vain. They aided many persons to escape who would otherwise have perished.

Imperfect means of communication prevented assistance until about daylight, when a fire engine from Greenville arrived just in time to save an immense livery establishment, and to finally bring the fire under control.

The bank, which stood next to the house first burned, and the college buildings were saved. Besides many stores, the CHUNAUGO [sic] & ALLEGHENY depot, a beautiful new structure, was destroyed. The loss is estimated at $100,000.
