Philadelphia, PA "Pennsylvania Hall" Burns, May 1838
RIOT AND FIRE.
Disgraceful scenes were exhibited at Philadelphia last week.
A splendid building, called "Pennsylvania Hall," had just been completed at a cost of about $40,000, in which abolition lectures were delivered by 3 or 4 females, to a mixed assembly of white and colored persons, on Wednesday evening last -- when the windows were broken.
The meeting intended to be held on Thursday evening was given up, at the solicitation of the Mayor, from an apprehension of the consequences.
A crowd assembled, however, broke up the inside of the building, and set the materials on fire -- and in a short time nothing was left except the walls. The firemen prevented much injury being done to the surrounding buildings.
