Myerstown, PA Troop Train Rams Freight Train, Jan 1946
TWO PERSONS DIE WHEN TROOP TRAIN RAMS FREIGHT.
Myerstown, Pa. (AP) -- Two persons were killed last night, on a soldier only two days home from Europe, when a Mississippi bound troops train carrying GIs collided with a Reading railroad freight train five miles west of here.
At least 22 persons were injured, 16 of them soldiers.
A Reading sopkesman in Philadelphia identified one of the dead as CHARLES W. HELLINGS, 32, Reading, Pa., fireman of the westbount troop train. The Public Relations officer at the nearby Indiantown Gap Military Base said the name of the soldier was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
Earlier, Reading officials indicated at least three persons had been killed but reported a recheck showed the soldier's body was being counted twice -- once at the Indiantown Gap Hospital and once at the scene of the wreck where piles of debris blocked four tracks.
The westbound tracks were torn up for more than a quarter of a mile, the railroader reported.
