Irwin, PA Flood, Jun 1907
FLOOD CREATES HAVOC
Bridges and Houses Destroyed by June Freshet.
Irwin, Pa., June 14.---One of the most disastrous floods in years visited this and neighboring cities, causing damage that will probably reach $150,000.
At this place the Youghiogheny branch of the Pennsylvania railroad was washed out in several places, so that the line was put out of commission. The biggest damage was done by a small stream that feeds the Caruthers reservoir southeast of town. The water ran over the dam and filled the valley from hill to hill. This flow met the flood in Tinker run and caught the Shaffer planning mill and lumber yard. It threw the debris against the railroad embankment and cars, lumber and bridges and portions of buildings were piled up in a great mass. The water rushed over the railroad and through the lower floor of the Crescent brewery building, doing thousands of dollars damage.
