Philadelphia, PA Cherry Street Explosion, Apr 1864
TERRIBLE EXPLOSION.---On the morning of the 25th, Monday, at half past seven, a terrible explosion took place at the manufactory of Cornelius & Baker, in Cherry street, Philadelphia. There were three fire proof buildings five stories in height, with a large space in the center. The boiler and engine room were in a separate building in this space. The explosion was not loud, but terrible in its result. A tall chimney, five stories high, was blown down; tools and materials in the different buildings were thrown about, and over one hundred and fifty windows were shattered. Three men were killed instantly and several more were injured. Some of the workmen jumped out of the windows. Over one hundred workmen were engaged in the buildings.
