PET DOG AFTER SAVING SIX LIVES LOSES OWN IN FIRE

Occupants of Building Housing Undertaking Establishment Aroused In Time to Escape From Structure: Effort to Rescue Animal Fails; Overheated Furnace Is Blamed.

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27.---A pet dog was the hero of a fire which early today destroyed the undertaking establishment of George F. Hackins, a two-story brick building in Carnegie, a suburb. The dog aroused the six occupants of the house in time to escape the burning structure but perished in futile attempt to rescue the animal. The damage was estimated at $51,000.

Firemen removed the body of a Carnegie resident from the mortuary where it had been taken to be prepared for burial today. They failed, however, to rescue the mummified body of a woman that had been kept in the mortuary by the undertaker for 15 years.

Flames and smoke drove the firemen back when they went after the second body which was burned, together with caskets valued at #15,000.

The fire was believed to have started from an overheated furnace.
