Titusville, PA Mill Accident, May 1866

SHOCKING AND FATAL ACCIDENT.----The body of a little girl was seen yesterday afternoon drifting down the current of the mill race a few rods below the race bridge on Franklin street. When it was recovered from the water, life was quite extinct, and the body was shockingly mutilated. The unfortunate girl, it is supposed, while walking over the open frame work of the flume in the rear of the mill, lost her footing and fell into the water, which is about six feet deep. It is probable that her body was instantly drawn through the box into the wheel. The wheel makes 60 revolutions per minute. After being terribly mutilated she was discharged beneath the mill and passed down the current. It was a singular circumstance that there were no makes of violence or suffering upon the face of the little one. She was ten years of age, a daughter of M. H. Bernstein. The afflicted parents seemed quite broken hearted by the calamity.

-----About seven o'clock Justice Strouse was called upon to act as Coroner over the body. After empanneling[sic] a jury of six, and examining six witnesses the following verdict was read by Dr. Luce, the foreman: That Mary Bernstein came to her death by accidentally falling into the mill race, and it is recommended that the exposed portion of the race above the wheel be planked over.
