Chester, PA Runaway Accident, Jun 1903

CHESTER.---Rev. D. L. MacCartney, pastor of Providence Avenue M. E. church, this city, and Rev. R. W. Humphries, formerly pastor of the Madison Street M. E. church, of Chester, now of Philadelphia, had a narrow escape from serious injury while going to a funeral at Fernwood Cemetery yesterday afternoon. The ministers were in a cab riding down the hill from Angora to Fernwood when the harness broke and the heavy cab lurched against the horses. The horses dashed away and the driver was unable to stop them. At the creek the bridge was blocked with teams and trolley cars, and only the yells of thee frightened driver cleared the way for the flying team. Finally, at a rise in the road, Rev. MacCartney jumped from the cab, raced up to the horses' heads and checked them after a struggle, in which he was badly bruised and his clothing torn to shreds.
