WALL CAVED IN
Workmen Had Narrow Escape at Lafayette Site
The Southeast wall of the old site of the Hotel Lafayette, at Broad and Sansom streets, caved in yesterday afternoon and slowly settled into the cellar, nearly forty feet below.
No one was caught by the falling earth, although several workmen had narrow escapes. The break extended out into Sansom street, which was immediately roped off from Broad to Fifteenth street, and closed to traffic. A large force of workmen was immediately set to work shoring up the wall, and as soon as it is rendered safe, Sansom street will be opened to traffic. It is supposed that the rumble of trolley cars and the passing of heavy wagons was the cause of the cave-in.
