East Stroudsburg, PA Train Plunges Into River, May 1948

TWO KILLED AS TRAIN PLUNGES INTO DELAWARE.

East Stroudsburg, Pa. -- (AP) -- The derailed engine and one of eight cars of a Lackawanna Railroad passenger train careened into the Delaware River Sunday as the train started the tortuous run through scenic Delaware Water Gap.
The two-man engine crew was missing and the New York Regional Headquarters of the Army, operating the railroads, said they were dead. The railroad identified them as ALBERT INGETTI of the Bronx, N.Y., and fireman DANIEL CRUSHINSKI of Jersey City.
There were very few passengers -- there was no estimate just how many -- on the train, and none were injured, the railroad said.
The train runs only once a week, mostly to carry Sunday papers. It had left Hoboken at 10:03 p.m. (EST) for Buffalo, N.Y., and was just starting the winding, two-mile run through the water gap when the engine left the rails.
It careened down a steep slope, dragging an empty baggage car just behind it. THe engine came to rest 30 feet from the shore, in an upright position, with the car barely out of the water.
The coupling to the next car twisted loose as the baggage car fell, and the remaining seven cars, including four passenger coaches, remained on the tracks.
