Somerset, PA Bus And Truck Collision, Oct 1952

4 DIE AS BUS RAMS TRUCK ON TURNPIKE.

Somerset, Pa., Oct. 4 (AP) -- A Greyhound bus bound from New York to Chicago rammed the rear of a big steel-laden truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Somerset today, killing four passengers and injuring 13 other persons.
It was the third disastrous bus collision in western Pennsylvania in less than three weeks. Ten persons were killed in the three crashes and 89 injured.
Dist. Atty. FRANK A ORBAN, JR., of Somerset county filed four charges of involuntary manslaughter against the bus driver, 24-year-old NORMAN CRIDER of York, Pa. No bond was set. Said ORBAN:
"We feel that CRIDER definitely was at fault and will press for an indictment in November and a trial in December."
The tragic crash occurred at 2:20 a.m. (EST) near the Laurel Hill tunnel, about eight miles west of here. Both vehicles were heading west. The right side of the bus was ripped open as if by a gigantic can opener.
Killed were:
DAVID ROBERTS of East Orange, N.J.
ANDERS BRETEL BJELBERT, 39, of Djalverud, Sweden.
WILBURN F. WILLIAMS, 42, of Lovington, Ill.
MRS. C. A. THOMAS of Ft. Wayne, Ind.
