Reading, PA Paper Mill Boiler Explosion, May 1876

Sad Calamity At Reading.
Reading, Pa., may 21.-At nine o’clock Saturday evening a boiler, used for boiling rags in the Keystone Paper Mill, opposite this city, exploded with terrific effect. A large portion of the mill was blown to atoms, and the boiler, weighing eight tons, was carried across the Tulpshocken creek, a distance of one hundred yards. Daniel Rothenberger, an employee of the mill, was caught between falling timbers and so seriously injured that he will probably die. The mill is owned by Geo. W. Bushong, who loss will be between $5000 and $10,000.
