Monessen, PA Fire And Explosion, Jan 1931
$125,000 DAMAGE IN FIRE AND EXPLOSION.

Monessen, Pa., Jan. 2. -- An explosion which firemen believe was caused by escaping gas and a resultant fire did estimated damages of $125,000 to more than a half dozen buildings in the business district here today. The blast and flames routed a score of persons from their apartments. The fire was checked only by the combined efforts of the Donora, Charleroi and Monessen fire departments. Two persons were injured slightly.
The explosion wrecked the two-story structure owned by EMIL VERNACCINI. Fire Chief WILLIAM LAIRD said he believed that fire in stoves of a fruit store on the ground floor ignited escaping gas.
Flames razed a jewelry store and millinery shop adjoining and spread to the vacant Olympic Theatre, Apartments, a pool room, a drug store and a music shop were among places damaged.
Several persons were thrown from their beds by the blast.
