Kelletville, PA Hotel Fire, Oct 1897
FATAL FIRE IN PENNSYLVANIA.
THREE PEOPLE PERISH AND SEVEN INJURED IN THE BURNING OF A KELLETVILLE HOTEL.
Oil City, Penn., Oct. 24. -- Three persons were burned to death and seven others severely injured in a fire that destroyed the Hotel Brooklyn, at Kelletville, twenty-five miles southeast of Oil City, early this morning. The building was a three-story one, roughly built of boards, and it burned like tinder.
Seventeen persons were asleep in the hotel. The fire, which originated on the second floor of the building, shut off all retreat from the rooms on the floor above. Six men on the second floor and five on the third saved themselves by jumping from the windows to the ground below, but none of these escaped without severe burns or hurts.
Those killed are "PROF." TUCKER, aged about sixty-five years, who traveled about giving stereopticon exhibitions, and is supposed to have come from Sewickly, near Pittsburg; ANDREW SALSGIVER of Tionesta, a mail carrier, aged twenty-one years and partly paralyzed, and MISS KATE MILLER of Kelletville, aged nineteen years. MISS EMMA KISER, a teacher in the Kelletville school, was so badly burned about the face and body and so severely injured by jumping from the second story of the hotel that she may die.
The fire is supposed to have been started by TUCKER knocking over a lamp which he used for making hot applications to an aching tooth.
