Salem Councilman's Car Darts Back Through Window - Damage Heavy.

SALEM, Or., March 9. - (Special.) - Councilman W. H. Eldridge in attempting to crank a recently purchased automobile, which was standing in front of C. M. Eppley's store on East State street, was surprised when the machine darted backwards and crashed through the window of the store and damaged much of the stock before the machine stopped.

When Eldridge cranked the machine the gears were meshed and the reverse lever thrown back. Mrs. Eldridge was in the car at the time and when the machine suddenly darted backwards she was thrown onto the muddy pavement, but was uninjured.
