Carmen, OK Tornado, May 1903

BY SCRIPPS-McRAE PRESS ASSOCIATION.

Kansas City. Mo., May 25,----The first details of the cyclone which wrecked Carmen, Oklahoma, killing Wm. Brown, drummer, and injuring three, were received today by the Mexico and Orient Railway officials. For an hour previous to the breaking of the cyclone hot and cold air currents alternated with absolute calm, driving every-body into their storm cellars, which accounts for the small loss of life. The wind demolished churches, post office, three lumber yards, three livery stables, new hotel and old lodging house, six residences and nine stores and factories. The front of every store in town was ruined and nearly every house was moved off its foundation. Total darkness prevailed.

The Daily Chronicle, Elyria, OH 25 May 1903
