East Palestine, OH Gas Well, Explosion, Apr 1889

An Immense Flow of Gas.

PITTSBURG, Pa., April 5.----An East Palestine, Ohio, special to The Times says: A natural gas well of serrific[sic] volume and pressure, has been struck near this place at a depth of 700 feet. The drillers were not expecting the strike and were entirely unprepared. The gas blew the drilling tools high into the air and ignited from fire under the boiler. The derrick and several small buildings near by were totally consumed. D. B. Taylor, Simeon Earley, Robert Tommings, Jr., and another man, name unknown, were seriously and perhaps fatally burned. The flame of the burning gas is more than fifty feet high.
