Ashtabula, OH Train Wreck, Dec 1912 - Eight Killed

EIGHT KILLED IN OHIO.

Ashtabula, O., Dec. 17. – Eight dead and seven injured was the toll of the wreck here last night when a Lake Shore and Michigan Southern coal train struck a stret car.

The dead are: LAURA LEAPHART, MRS. FRANK C. BARTLERR, MRS. W. H. COOK, MRS. ROSE THOMPSON, MRS. GEORGE KITSON, MR. AND MRS. DAVID STOWE, all of Ashtabula; MRS. JOHN C. ESPEY of Willoughby.

All of the injured are expected to recover. Motorman McCutcheon is held by police.

Motorman McCutcheon was found near the remnants of the vestibule of the car. He was rushed to the hospital. He could give no account of the accident.

The rescuers next found the body of Mrs. Bartlett. She had been seated in the front part of the car and was crushed to death. Then the body of Miss Leahart was found under a pile of coal and splintered wood. Ralph Chubb was located near the wreckage of the back part of the street car and was alive.

One car crashed through F. H. D??zer's [illegible] grocery store and spilled the groceries there in. The side of Mrs. Frances Culver's residence was town [illegible] and eighty feet of Richard ??ther's brick warehouse was demolished.
