Ashtabula, OH Train Wreck, Dec 1912 - Seven Killed, Seven Injured
7 KILLED, 7 INJURED, AS TRAIN HITS CAR.
Trolley Smashed at Deadly Ohio Grade Crossing.
Seven dead and seven injured was the toll of the wreck at Ashtabula, O., when a Lake Shore and Michigan Southern railroad coal train struck a street car. Complete investigation of the huge pile of wreckage and coal that resulted from the collision revealed but one additional body, that of DAVID STOWE. The dead are:
LAURA LEAPHART, MRS. FRANK C. BARTLETT, MRS. W. H. COOK, MRS. GEORGE KITSON, and MR. AND MRS. DAVID STOWE of Ashtabula and MRS. JOHN C. ESPY of Willoughby.
All the injured are expected to recover.
Immediate investigation of the cause of the wreck will be made. McCUTCHEON, motorman of the car, is held by the police.
The street car was directly in the center of the crossing when the heavy coal train crashed into it. Neither the engine driver nor his fireman saw the car until it was too late to slow down.
The engine driver and fireman after setting the brakes jumped and escaped uninjured.
The heavy locomotive tossed the car aside as though it was a toy. The passengers who escaped death were thrown through the windows, thus avoiding being crushed beneath the wreckage under which the others were killed. The motorman and conductor were thrown thirty feet or more, but escaped with cuts and bruises.
