Alta, OH Railroad Accident Caused By Broken Frog, Nov 1884

CAUSED BY A BROKEN FROG.

A NUMBER OF PERSONS INJURED IN A RAILROAD ACCIDENT.

Mansfield, Ohio, Nov. 1. -- Passenger train No. 1 on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, due here at 5:58 this morning, jumped a frog near Alta, Ohio, while going at the rate of 40 miles per hour. The first two cars were not damaged, but the third car struck a freight engine on a siding, and the cars following were telescoped and totally demolished. No one was killed, but the following were injured:
The conductor, C. D. McDONALD, of Newark, Ohio, a severe scalp wound, badly bruised and cut about the body and one arm sprained.
MRS. MAMIE LILLEY and two daughters, of Zanesville, Ohio, one seriously and the others slightly injured.
J. W. CARSON, fireman, of Newark, Ohio, badly hurt.
Ex-Mayor HEILMAN, of Columbus, Ohio, slightly injured.
CHARLES GERSDORFF, of Washington, D. C., slightly injured.
MRS. W. FOX, of Zanesville, face badly cut and wrist dislocated. W. FOX, her husband, was slightly hurt.
THEODORE FOX, of Zanesville, injured about the breast.
MRS. THEODORE FOX was internally hurt; not necessarily fatal.
MRS. D. SCHAEFER, Newcomerstown, Ohio, slightly injured.
MRS. C. S. BAKER, McConnelsville, Ohio, compound fracture of the left ankle.
J. B. MOORE, Chicago, ribs broken and otherwise badly injured.
MARY C. NIND, Indianapolis, cut about head and face.
MISS. ANNA ORR, Newark, Ohio, leg injured.
GEORGE A. BLACKWELL, Chicago, body bruised.
MRS. J. H. NEPTUNE, Barnesville, Ohio, badly bruised about the body.
The injured were taken to Zanesville.
