CLEVELAND LANDMARK BURNS; BLAZE DEFEATS WRECK PLANS

CLEVELAND, O., Feb. 14.---The old Luetkemeyer building on lower Superior avenue, just east of West Ninth street, a landmark for 40 years, was saved from the wrecker today by a spectacular fire that swept through the upper floors of the block which within a few days wrecker were to have razed to make way for the new union station right of way.

There was only about $25,000 worth of stock remaining on the main floor, the Leutkemeyer company, wholesale hardware, having been absorbed by another company, and the stock removed. The upper floors were vacant, it was said. The building had been unoccupied for about six months.

Two hundred firemen and twenty two fire companies fought the fire, the flames towering fifty feet above the building at one time.

Firemen were at a loss to explain the cause of the fire.
