Zanesville, OH Tornado, Jun 1912 - page 3
Bliss Gray of Jackson street was struck in the face by flying timbers. His face was cut and a slight fracture of the skull resulted. C.B. Musselman of the Newark road was slightly bruised about one arm. Another man whose last name was not learned was badly cut on the head.
Joe Russell, Springfield township, was struck on the foot by a falling stone. The outer side of the right foot was badly bruised. James Singleton was crushed about the head. Both were taken to the Good Samaritan hospital. William Mccormick, Harry Mcelroy, Mrs. Albert Burgeon each received painful but not serious injuries.
The St. Nicholas Catholic Church was the refuge for all the St. Thomas congregation for the remaining masses of the morning. Rev. Father Barr referred to the awful destruction of the morning and asked the prayer of the congregation for the dead and dying.
The St. Thomas church was not the only congregation property to suffer, for the fathers are practically without a roof over their heads. A portion of the roof was blown from the parsonage at the same time the church was wrecked.
The two victims, JOHN F. DINAN and THOMAS SKINION, were found close beside each other, after the cloud of dust raised and made it possible for the rescuers to do their work. DINAN was pinned under a large stone between two seats. The stone was of enormous weight.
One man was unable to roll it off his body and finally five men were necessary to lift it away. A portion of the stone was resting on his arm.
Mr. DINAN, aged 36, was a valued employee in the clerical department of the B & O. He was a member of the Holy Name society and was highly esteemed by his many friends.
He is survived by his widow and three children: Robert, Gerald, and Marry, all of the home. His mother, Mrs. Meeda Dinan, also survives. The remains were removed to the Peoples undertaking rooms and later removed to the home.
A sad connection is the fact that his brother, Raymond Dinan, was found in the canal at the Ohio electric power station several years ago after he had been missing several months.
The funeral will be conducted at 9 o’clock Tuesday morning. As the St. Thomas church is closed the services will be conducted at the St. Nicholas church. Interment will be made in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
THOMAS SKINION, aged 32, has been a highly respected resident of Zanesville for years. He was hurt in a similar manner seven years ago and lay in an unconscious condition for two months. For seven years he has been employed at Herdmans. He was a member of the Holy Name society.
His widow and two brothers and three sisters survive: Patrick, Mrs. Julia Devine and Margaret and Marry Skinion of this city and George of Chicago.
The funeral will be conducted at the St. Nicholas Catholic church at 10 o’clock Tuesday morning. Interment will be made in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
Very Rev. Father L.F. Kearney, pastor of the St. Thomas church, left Thursday for Houston, Tex. T conduct a retreat for two weeks. Father Quinn aided in the rescue work.
It is understood that the loss at the church is at least partly covered with insurance.
Mrs. Ellen Fulkerson, North Seventh street. Was reported among the list of injured late Sunday evening. She fell on leaving the church and was badly bruised.
Had Relatives Here.
JOHN F. DINAN of Zanesville, who was killed when the spire of the St. Thomas Cathedral was blown over on the church Sunday morning, is related to Newark people and is well known here.
He was a nephew of Mrs. Thomas Egan of Buckingham street and a first cousin of Mrs. Prior, wife of Councilman John A. Prior of South Second street.
