Warren, OH Drowning, Aug 1890

One of the saddest affairs that has occurred in Niles for some time was the drowning of Mrs. C W. Forester about four o'clock last evening in Mosquito creek above the dam. The lady with her 2 year old boy and little girl name Loughern were boat riding in the creek. She was rowing and the little girl and baby were sitting in the rear of the boat. The two small children were reaching for pond lilles as they passed them on the water beside the boat and while her two year old boy was reaching over the rear of the boat he fell into the creek. She became wild with excitement and plunged down after the child. There were four young men in a boat a short distance from her and when they saw the baby fall into the creek, they petitioned her to remain quiet as they would rescue the baby when it came up, but their urgent requests were of no avail. Soon as the child came to the top of the water they succeeded in taking it out safely, but she did not rise after she went down.The water is very deep in the place where the drowning occurred and it is full of snags. Her clothing, undoubtedly became caught on the snags and held her at the bottom. The alarm was given and soon there were crowns of people on the creek banks. Search was made for her and body was found in the same place where she went down in a half hour after by William Carleton. The body was taken to her home on Vienna avenue. The four young men who were in the boat near Mrs. Foresters boat were Thomas Wilson, Charles Hardman, John Jobe and Frank Wagstaff. They did all they could to rescue the party. The last words they heard her say was, "My God, save my boy."Ellis Gles was standing on the bank at the time and swam in to where the boat was, and took it and the little Laughern girl to the shore. Mrs. Forester was 23 years old. Her husband was at New Lisbon at the time. He is a fireman on the Niles & New Lisbon branch. The family moved from Sharon to this place last fall.

Drowned at Niles

Mrs. C. W. Forester, formerly of Sharon, was drowned at Niles on Sunday evening. She had gone boat riding with her only child, not quite two years old, and a young girl to take care of it. In some way the child got away from the girl and fell into the water. The frantic mother sprang to her feet with a shriek to "Save my child!" and fell over the side of the boat into the water and sank, to rise no more. It is thought that she fainted or died of fright, as she made no effort to save herself or child when she fell in. Her body was afterwards found in several feet of water, her clothes caught on a snag at the bottom. Her child was rescued unharmed by people who had seen the accident. Her body was brought here on Tuesday for interment and was buried in Oakwood cemetery from St. John's Episcopal church on Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Forester was 23 years of age, and formerly Miss Mattie Bailey, daughter of Wm. Bailey, of this place. She was married about three years ago to W. C. Forester, an engineer on the Nypano, who, with their infant son survives her. Besides her father and mother, several brothers and sisters mourn her death.
