EARTH TREMOR JOLTS OHIOANS.
Columbus, Ohio (AP) -- Thousands of Central and Southern Ohioans were jolted awake in the early hours Saturday by an earthquake which caused no damage but jammed telephone lines to police and news agencies.
Scientists said it was "resettlement" quake of the earths crust, continuing from the glacial period. It came at 12:41 a.m. and was recorded on the seismograph at Fordham University in New York City.
Residents of the Columbus and Newark areas were jolted from their sleep. Reports of the quake came from as far south as the Athens area.
It was a "pretty good quake for Ohio," said Edward Walter, director of the John Carroll University seismological observatory. Such quakes, while they have happened before in Ohio, are considered rare.
