Genoa, OH Truck And Car Collision, Aug 1963
FIERY COLLISION KILLS 10, WIPES OUT FAMILY OF 7.
TRUCKER LEAPS FROM CAB, LIVES.
EIGHT CHILDREN AMONG VICTIMS.
Toledo -- (AP) -- Ten persons, seven of them members of one family, died Wednesday night in a fiery truck-car collision on Ohio 51 near Genoa in Ottawa county. Eight of the victims were children.
All of the persons, migrant crop workers, were in a 1957 station wagon en route to a drive-in movie.
Killed were:
FELIZ CAMPOS, 41, of Florida City, Fla.
CATALINE, 36, his wife.
And their children:
MARIA, 14.
JOSEPH, 12.
ROSA, 10.
TERESA, 7.
DAVID 5.
ALso in the vehicle were three other migrant workers' children -- RAOUL CHICO, 13; his brother, JAIME, 7, and a sister GUADALUPE, 6.
There were no survivors in the station wagon.
TERESA CAMPOS died several hours later in St. Charles hospital in suburban Oregon.
Both families were workers on the EMIL WEHERT farm near Elmore. Both had arrived in the Toledo area Tuesday.
CHARLES STRONG, 38, of Rt. 3, Swanton, jumped from the flaming cab of his semi-trailer after the crash.
The Ohio Highway Patrol quoted STRONG as saying the car tried to pass another vehicle and hit him head-on. STRONG was released from the hospital after treatment.
The patrol said bodies were strewn over the highway, 10 miles southeast of Toledo, after the crash.
The parents of the CHICO children, MR. and MRS. CAMILO CHICO, were in a state of shock at the hospital and declined to identify the bodies of the children. They talked with hospital and patrol officials through an interpreter and had friends identify the children.
Patrolmen said the CAMPOS family came to this country from Mexico in 1952.

1963 Genoa car-truck accident
I was a young teenager when this tragedy happened and lived only a hunred yards or so from the scene of the accident. It occurred around dusk on Rt. 51, several hundred feet from the front door of Star and Lil's Restaurant in Genoa.
I also knew the family of the drunken driver who caused the accident. They were deeply hurt by the aftermath and moved out of state shortly thereafter. I visited them years later but did not mention the accident. The father and driver of the car was by that time in a wheelchair and could not communicate very well.
