Piqua, OH Tombstone Falls & Kills Child, May 1945

TOMBSTONE FALLS ON GIRL CAUSING FATAL INJURIES

Internal head injuries suffered when a tombstone fell on her skull resulted in the death of Linda, 2-year-old daughter of Pvt. and Mrs. Carl Shane, St. Paris, route 2, at Piqua Memorial hospital at 6:27 p.m. Wednesday.

The child had accompanied her mother to Mt. Zion cemetery near St. Paris where Mrs. Shane worked as a caretaker. While the mother worked, the little girl was playing among the old tombstones and was found unconscious with the stone toppled over beside her.

She was brought to the hospital here, where she was admitted at 2:30 p.m., never regaining consciousness and suffering from hemorrhage inside the skull.

Born near St. Paris July 20, 1942, she was the daughter of Carl and Grace Runkle Shane. The child's father is with the armed forces in Germany.

Surviving in addition to the parents are the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Runkle of St. Paris, route 2, and Mr. and Mrs. Louis Shane of Fletcher.

Services at the Richeson funeral home, St. Paris, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. E.S.T.

The body will be taken tonight to the residence where friends may call until Saturday afternoon when it will be returned to the funeral home for services.
