St. Paul, April 15. -- A dispatch to the Dispatch from Lakota, N.D., says:
The Great Northern Oriental limited fast coast train, which left St. Paul at 10 o'clock Sunday morning, was wrecked and totally burned at 1:20 o'clock this morning. Six persons are known to have met death, and it is not known how many bodies are still in the ruins. The accident occurred four miles from here, near the village of Bartlett within half a mile of where the same train was wrecked last fall. It is the worst wreck that ever occurred in North Dakota. The cars comprising the train were destroyed, with the exception of the standard sleeper and observation car. The train was running 35 miles an hour and the cause of the accident is not known. All the cars left the track.
Many thrilling escapes are reported and numerous acts of heroism are told by the survivors. The engine lies across the line dividing Nelson and Ramsey counties. The mail car passed the engine and burned in Ramsey county.
Mail Clerk JONES of Grand Forks was killed, but his body was taken from the car by Mail Clerk FODNESS, who was himself severely burned about the head.
The train carried many passengers. Every car, except the observation car, left the track, but, the sleeper was pulled on again before the flames reached it. The cars went over a ten-foot embankment and a few minutes after the accident a gas tank exploded and set fire to the wreck. The report of the explosion was heard here, a distance of four miles.
The uninjured worked herotically to rescue the imprisoned, and it is thought all but three were removed. Those killed were in the front part of the smoker, which was telescoped by the express car in front of it.
Passengers give special praise to the news agent, W. H. GREEN of St. Paul, who worked heroically in rescuing the injured. He himself was considerably injured.
A special train with surgeons was sent from Devil's Lake and another was made up here which ran to Michigan, and carried the coroner and all physicians from Michigan to the scene.
A Fargo correspondent of the Associated Press telegraphs that but three persons were killed in the Great Northern wreck.
