Antler, West Hope, Souris, Sherwood, Mohall, Loraine, ND Tornado Damage, Aug 1911
VICTIMS OF WIND STORM PLACED AT 20.
MANY HURT AND MUCH PROPERTY DESTROYED BY TORNADO THAT SWEPT NORTH DAKOTA.
Fargo, N. D., Aug. 21. -- Estimates received here from the tornado swept districts of North Dakota indicate that while only four bodies have been found, a number more were killed in the death dealing wind storm of Sunday. Wire service is paralyzed, but it is believed that when communication is restored, it will be learned that at least a score of lives were lost. Two hundred persons are known to have been injured, and it is feared that even this roll will be greatly increased.
The property loss, it is believed, will far exceed the original estimate of $1,000,000.
The tornado did the greatest damage in West Hope, Antler, Souris, Sherwood, Mohall, Loraine and in that vicinity. More than 150 persons were injured, some of them seriously, in West Hope and vicinity.
From early reports it seems that the tornado first struck at Antler, cutting a wide swath through that place and leaving death and desolation in its wake. Every building in the path of the wind was razed and a large number of persons injured, some of them fatally. All wires are down in that vicinity and it is impossible to secure an accurate estimate of the dead, injured and property loss.
From Antler the storm made its way south and west, leveling every building before it. The tail end of the tornado is reported to have reached Winnipeg, across the Canadian border.
