Troy, NY Business Fire, Jan 1911
HEAVY FIRE LOSS IN CITY OF TROY.
BUSINESS STRUCTURE DESTROYED AT LOSS OF THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND.
Troy, N. Y., Jan. 26. -- The Boston store and several other structures in the business section of this city were destroyed by fire early this morning, entailing a loss estimated at $300,000.
The local fire department had a desperate struggle in their efforts to contol the flames, which for a time threatened to wipe out a large area of the business section. Apparatus from Lansingburg came to the aid of the local fire department.
The fire was discovered in the Boston store at about five o'clock. At ten o'clock the fire was still burning fiercely, but it was thought that the firemen had it under control.
About 9:30 four firemen were buried under falling walls and at this hour (10:30) their comrades are working furiously in an effort to save them.
The burned business places include Woolworth's Five and Ten Cent store, Kresge's Five and Ten Cent store, CLARENCE WILSON, haberdasher and N. J. MYERS.
The department store of WM. H. FREAR and Co., one of the largest in this section of the state, was also badly damaged by smoke.
Three of the firemen who were caught under the falling walls were extricated from the debris by their fellows in a serious condition. One of the unfortunate men, EDWARAD J. BUTLER, assistant captain of truck No. 2, was dead when taken out. BUTLER was given absolution by Father SMITH while the rescuers were working to get him out.
