Long Island, NY Shelter Island New Prospect House Hotel Fire, Jun 1942
New Prospect House, Widely Known Hotel On Long Island, Burns.
Shelter Island, June 26 (AP).---New Prospect House, for 50 years one of the best-known hostelries on the eastern end of Long Island, was destroyed at 4 A. M. today by a fire of undetermined origin.
The 100-room, six-story frame building burned to the ground. Eighteen guests who were in the house, fleeing in their night clothes, escaped injury as did 60 employes[sic] who were in a nearby annex.
Notables from all walks of life have been guests at the house, which occupied a high promontory overlooking Greenport Harbor off the tip of Eastern Long Island.
