New Rochelle, NY Lake View Hotel Stable Fire, Nov 1910

FIRE HORSES BURNED.

New Rochelle Company's Quarters Destroyed and a Hotel Damaged.

Special to The New York Times.

NEW ROCHELLE, N. Y., Nov. 20.---Members of Olympia Hose Company risked their lives late last night in a fruitless attempt to save the two horses purchased recently for their apparatus. The horses were lost in a fire that destroyed the stable of the Lake View Hotel. The hotel, a wooden structure, was saved.

The fire is believed to have been caused by an overheated stove near the stalls. Edward Darrow, the driver, had left the stable to get a late supper, leaving several members of the fire company in the loft. Ten minutes after they left Henry Gruse, a small boy, heard the cries and kicking of the horses. When he opened the door he was driven back by flames.

The boy rang in an alarm. Several men chopped a hole in the side of the stable in an effort to get at the horses, but they were forced to retreat.

Before the other firemen arrived the stable was a heap of ashes. Only the hose truck was saved.
