Saranac Lake, NY Apartment House Fire Kills Seven, July 1925

SEVEN PEOPLE BURN TO DEATH.

PERISHED IN AN APARTMENT HOUSE FIRE AT SARANAC LAKE, N.Y.

By The Associated Press.
Saranac Lake, N. Y., July 4. -- Seven persons lost their lives in a fire which swept a three-story wooden apartment house here early today, either trapping the victims in their rooms or cutting off their escape. The origin of the fire was undetermined. The flames started in the rear of the building, either in the basement or on the first floor.
The dead:
GEORGE MARTIN, 65 years old, of Chateaugay.
GEORGE DUCKETT, 21, of Saranac Lake, and his infant, daughter.
PETER DWYER, 35, Saranac Lake.
KENNETH MONIKEY, 11, of Saranac Lake.
ROBERT McGOWAN, 16, of Burlington, Vt.
JOSEPH McGOWAN, 21, of Burlington, a brother of ROBERT.
MRS. GEORGE DUCKETT is in a critical condition at the general hospital. She sustained serious burns and was injured by jumping from a third story window.
MRS. DUCKETT, evidently believing she was holding her child, dropped a pillow into the arms of the firemen below. Then she jumped to the earth. Two hours later when the firemen were able to enter the building they found the baby dead in its crib.
The burned building formerly was a hotel known as the Adirondack house but recently was made over into apartments. It was damaged to the extent of $15,000.
