Maysville, NY Lake Steamer CHAUTAUQUA Boiler Explosion, Aug 1871

ANOTHER BOILER EXPLOSION.

WHOLESALE SLAUGHTER AT MAYSVILLE ON THE STEAMER CHAUTAUQUA -- FOUR PERSONS KNOWN TO BE KILLED AND FOURTEEN WOUNDED.

Maysville, N. Y., Aug. 14. -- The boiler of the steamer CHAUTAUQUA, Capt. MURRAY, exploded this afternoon, while taking in wood at Whitney's Landing, six miles below Maysville. The dead, as far as known are:
MRS. HOPKINS and daughter, residence unknown.
HENRY COOK, of Corry, a colored barber at the Chautauqua House.
MRS. E. C. COCHRAN, of Buffalo, was drowned, and her body has not been recovered.
The injured are:
MRS. SAMUEL BARTHOLOMEW, of Portland, N. Y.
ALVIN PLUMB, of Westfield, N. Y.
CORNELIUS SHAW, of Jamestown, N. Y.
MAJOR CAMERON, of Jamestown.
CAPT. MURRAY, of Jamestown.
W. P. MILLER, of Pittsburg, Penn.
D. L. CRAWFORD, of Pittsburg, Penn.
ALFRED CRANDLE, of Alleghany, Penn.
JOHN BEMUS, of Bemus Point.
F. W. ANSHUTZ, of Alleghany, Penn.
W. C. DAVIS, of Corry, Penn.
IDUCA and LIZZIE ELLS, and MISS HOPKINS, of Cleveland, Ohio.
The boat is badly wrecked. Several of the injured will probably die.
